CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Cleveland Middle School has three CTE Academies: Medical Science, Engineering Technology, and Business Communications. These Academies offer different classes for each grade level at CMS. No matter the topic, CTE classes create opportunities for CMS students to engage in hands-on and real-life experiences. Students will build, design and launch rockets in STEM class, produce live morning news shows in RaiderTV Broadcasting class, and participate in lab dissections of pig hearts and sheep brains.

Medical Science Academy Teacher, Lauren McIntyre, was a nurse for ten years before switching over to the classroom. She worked in the ER, ICU, Dialysis Clinic and a Plastic Surgeon’s office. Hannah Medema, Business Communications Academy teacher, previously worked in the business field. Currently, she teaches while simultaneously running a small graphic design business called, Hannah Medema Design. Engineering Technology teacher, Derek Morris, has taught STEM classes for over fifteen years. He also is the CMS Boys Basketball coach.

CTE teachers strive to deepen student knowledge and interest in future careers. They link class curriculum and students to the outside business, medical, and STEM communities through advisory committees and CTSOs.

The CTSO at Cleveland Middle is TSA, Technology Student Association. This club is a national organization of students engaged in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This club provides extra curricular opportunities for students to engage in the CTE program.
