FIRST, “For Inspiration and Research in Science and Technology,” provides opportunities for building robots, sharing information with other teams around the world, competing at a high but cooperative level, and inspiring others to enjoy science and technology. MoM team members have an exceptional opportunity to create, build and learn!
Ministry of Mechanics began in the spring of 2018 with the support and sponsorship of DENSO, Athens, and Energy Systems Group (ESG). The CHS Engineering Department was approached by these companies about starting a FIRST Robotics team in the fall of 2017, and planning/preparation/application for the team began in the spring of 2018.
In our first competition at the 2019 Smoky Mountain Regional, we placed 32 out of 52 teams, and won the Rookie Inspiration award with our robot "Karen!"

Design Team
Develop an annual team theme (based on either the competition theme, or one voted on by the team)
Develop team paraphernalia, such as buttons, business cards, brochures, etc... (while following intellectual property and copyright laws)
Meet with the Drive Team, Logistics Team, and Scouting, Fabrication, Electrical, Programming Leads to come up with the robot’s competition functionality and strategy
Research ideas from other teams by participating in web forums and other forms of online communication
Develop, reverse engineer, or download 3D models of parts, assemblies, and sub-assemblies by using Autodesk product, and any 3D models given by vendors. (andymark.com, firstinspires.org, etc…)
Utilize the school’s 3D printers to fabricate parts as necessary
Electrical Team
Meet with the Drive Team, Logistics Team, and Scouting, Fabrication, Design, Programming Leads to come up with the robot’s competition functionality and strategy
Work with the Safety Lead to ensure safe working practices, cleanliness, and tool/material organization in the pit area
Plan out the wiring of the robot
Ensures the Robot has a sufficient power supply and redundancy power
Works beside the Fabrication Team to install and wire motors, sensors, battery(s), and other electrical components.
Run, organize, splice, and fasten all wires to electrical components and terminals.
Fabrication Team
Meet with the Drive Team, Logistics Team, and Scouting, Electrical, Design, Programming Leads to come up with the robot’s competition functionality and strategy
Work with the Safety Lead to ensure safe working practices, and cleanliness in the pit area
Keep track of tools and materials using an agreed upon inventory system
Works beside the Electrical Team to install and wire motors, sensors, battery(s), and other electrical components.
Communicate with the Design Team about Inventor, AutoCAD, and 3D printing needs.
Fabricate the robot with hand/power tools, and heavy machinery (such as the mill, lathe, plasma cutter, welders, CNC’s, etc…)
Logistics Team
Meet with the Drive Team, and Scouting, Fabrication, Electrical, Design, Programming Leads to come up with the robot’s competition functionality and strategy
Keep track of all team documentation on the Team’s Google Drive
Keep track of after school meeting attendance
Maintain the team’s budget (e.g. fundraisers, purchases, sponsorship funds, grant funds, etc…)
Keep the team handbook up to date
Aide Mentors in writing and preparing grant and/or sponsorship documentation for submittal
Work with Safety Lead on preparing safety guidelines, tests, and goals for the team
Be the point “persons” for the team about competition’s rules, guidelines, point systems, etc...
Outreach Team
Develop relationships with local businesses for sponsorships
Handle the activity of fundraising, budgeting and funds will be up to the Logistics Team
Promotes the visible face of #7406 Ministry of Mechanics (e.g. website, Social Media, press releases, community outreach, etc…).
Interact with visiting groups, judges, media, fellow students, etc… when at competition or at community events
They take still photographs and or video clips for such things as our website, Social Media, community outreach, etc…
Programming Team
Meet with the Drive Team, and Scouting, Fabrication, Electrical, Design, Logistics Leads to come up with the robot’s competition functionality and strategy
Develop the Java-based software necessary to drive the robot in both autonomous and tele-operated modes.

The Malachi Movement
What if we combined emerging STEM Skills with the unmet needs of those around us?
Our project began as a technical challenge to a high school robotics team, but it has evolved into an open call to redesign play for children and families with special mobility considerations. We are a national collaborative of students, educators, makers and families that are compelled to answer the burning question in the big letters above.
Malachi
Students at Cleveland High School are tagged in one mother's request for some help to modify and present a very special Christmas present. They got to work on an ambitious design for Malachi. His love of dinosaurs and individual mobility needs drove the design and building phase.
Ollie's mother reached out to Cleveland High School after hearing about the Malachi Movement, and asked if the students could help him to get around and enjoy being a kid!
